8 Tips for Strong and Healthy Teeth

Healthy teeth are one of the main indicators of a healthy body. Proper oral and dental hygiene will help you prevent tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, pregnancy complications, respiratory infections, and even cancer.  It’s essential to take the right steps every day to take care of teeth and prevent health issues. This involves using the right oral care products, rinsing, brushing teeth properly, as well as being mindful of your daily habits. 1. Gargle with baking soda and saltwater 

In the morning, rinse your mouth with ¼  teaspoon of baking soda and 8 ounces of water to balance your mouth’s pH.  In the evening, gargle a warm glass with ¼ of a teaspoon of salt and 8 ounces of water. Saltwater will reduce inflammation and stop bacteria from forming. 

2. Use high-quality floss 

A high-quality floss is always the best choice. It’s a good way to stimulate gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation. You can try to use floss infused with tea tree oil (an antimicrobial) or other beneficial ingredients such as coconut oil to make flossing a more luxurious experience. Consult your family dentist to choose the best type of dental floss for you. 

3. Chew on xylitol gum

Xylitol increases salivation and helps reduce cavities and plaque. Chewing gum for 15 minutes after meals will help protect your teeth by removing food debris and increasing your saliva flow. Saliva strengthens your tooth enamel since it carries phosphate and calcium. 

4. Use a natural mouthwash

You can try to use a natural mouth wash in the evenings. Natural mouthwashes won’t kill all the beneficial bacteria in your mouth. They will promote a healthy oral environment which is essential for optimal health. 

5. Brush your teeth properly

The way you brush your teeth is very important for maintaining dental health. Poor tooth brushing is almost as bad as not brushing at all. Remember that unremoved plaque can harden and lead to calculus buildup and gingivitis (gum inflammation). 

6. Don’t forget about your tongue

Plaque can also build up on your tongue. This can lead to bad breath as well as other oral health problems. Don’t forget to gently brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.

7. Try to reduce sugar consumption 

Reducing the amount of sugar you eat and drink is equally important for keeping healthy and strong teeth. A lot of the sugars we eat and drink are in food and drinks such as:

  • Sweets (chocolate, biscuits, and cakes) 
  • Sugary drinks (soft, milky, and fizzy drinks)
  • Fruit juice, including fresh fruit juice without added sugar  
  • Smoothies
  • Buns
  • Pastries
  • Puddings
  • Sugary breakfast cereals
  • Jams
  • Marmalades
  • Syrups
  • Ice cream
  • Sorbets
  • Dried fruit 
  • Sweet sauces

Remember that sugars that occur naturally in foods such as fruit or milk are not harmful to our teeth. However, when the fruit is juiced or blended, like in smoothies, the sugars that are released from the structure of the fruit can damage your teeth, so it’s best to cut down smoothies and fresh fruit juices.

8. Eat a healthy diet 

Foods you eat and drink can cause tooth decay, therefore a healthy diet is essential for your teeth. A balanced diet includes plenty of vegetables and fruit, as well as starchy foods, such as rice, bread, potatoes, and pasta (choose wholegrain foods and try to eat potatoes with their skin). You should also consume more foods high in protein such as fish, meat, eggs, beans or other non-dairy sources of protein, and some milk and dairy foods (cottage cheese and cheese). Try to eat less food and drinks high in fat and sugar.
