Shakira is back on her feet after she was forced to cancel her El Dorado tour’s Los Angeles concert because of a virus and returned to the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, captivating the crowd with her sultry sound.

Having started in music at the age of 13, Shakira is Colombia’s highest-selling artist after having sold over 70 million albums worldwide, in addition to being one of the world’s most powerful women because of her entrepreneurial pursuits.

On top of producing music, the Waka Waka singer is a former presenter of The Voice, was appointed to the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics by President Barack Obama and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. But what is Shakira’s net worth?

Where is Shakira from?

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia, more commonly known as Shakira, she is a popular singer who has won a number of Grammy and American Music Awards, as stated on Biography.com.

Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time and it is estimated that she has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. She also served as a judge on the US version of the singing competition television show, The Voice.

Being born to a Lebanese father and Colombian mother, Shakira honours both sides of her roots in her music and she has done since signing her first record deal at the age of 13. Despite her first two albums flopping, her third, Pies Descalzos released in 1996, went on to sell more than three million copies.

Her next record, which came out two years later, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? hit the top of the Billboard Latin charts and it was not long before Shakira won her first Grammy, for Best Latin Pop Album award for Shakira: MTV Unplugged.

At the age of 20, she moved to Miami, Florida in order to expand her fan base to the US and taught herself how to write songs in English and later, asked Emilio Estefan from Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine to be her manager and producer.

In 2001, Shakira released her first English-language album called Laundry Service which quickly resulted in success in the US – the album reaching number three on the charts and selling more than 200,000 copies in the first week.

This record included Whenever, Wherever and Underneath Your Clothes and the album returned to the top 10 twice in 2005. Following this, she released both Spanish and English versions of Oral Fixation, which garnered Shakira her second Grammy, this time for Best Latin Rock/Alternative album.

After touring all over the world, Shakira released two concert albums and in 2009, released She Wolf. A year later, she released Waka Waka for the World Cup. In 2012, her worldwide album had sold over 70 million records and was confirmed as a judge on The Voice.

In 2016, Shakira dropped Chantaje from her upcoming album El Dorado and upon its release a year later, the tracklist was full of songs sung in Spanish. She planned a tour but it had to be cancelled because she suffered from strained vocal cords. Following a Best Latin Pop Album Grammy win, she resumed her world tour.

Who is Shakira’s husband?
Shakira is married to Spanish footballer Gerard Pique and celebrated their eighth anniversary in 2018, as reported by People. After meeting at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, they first sparked dating rumours after sharing a hug at Shakira’s concert in Barcelona in 2011.

The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Milan in 2013 and three years later, when Pique’s team Copa del Rey won against the Athletic Club in 2015, Shakira was there to smooch him. Shakira announced she was pregnant a year later also, and they welcomed their second son Sasha in 2015.

However, Shakira’s previous relationship with Antonio de la Rua continues to cause the singer grief. In 2013, he sued her for $250 million (£193m) when he claimed that he had helped her create some of her songs in addition to the Shakira brand.

Alongside this, as reported by Miami.com, when Shakira took to Instagram to comment on Pique’s retirement from the Spanish national team to focus on the Barcelona team, she wrote: ‘Love, you have just finished a stage that we will always keep in our hearts. One of the happiest moments of my life was also seeing you win in 2010 with the team and celebrate Spain the champions!’

However, eagle-eyed fans spotted that because Shakira’s relationship with Antonio de la Rua ended in August 2010, it may have confirmed rumours that the singer cheated on him with Gerard Pique because the World Cup final was in July of that year.

In addition to this, she received between $53 million (£41m) and $100 million (£77m) for various tours, alongside $300 million (£232m) for a ten-year deal with Live Nation. Shakira also received over $660,000 (£510,000) for her role as a spokesperson for the Freixenet Christmas commercial and her annual salary for The Voice was $12 million (£9.2m).

In 2014, she also announced that she would be in a partnership with Mattel’s Fisher-Price to develop a 12-part web series and a new line of toys. However, her compensation from the deal was donated to her charity, the Barefoot Foundation which benefits childhood development programs in Latin America.
