These Car Repair Tasks You Shouldn’t DIY

If you learn how to repair your vehicle, you can easily save thousands of dollars annually. Basic maintenance skills will come in more than handy, so if you’re a car owner, you shouldn’t be afraid of getting your hands a bit dirty. Changing a tire, changing oil or air filters, replacing wipers, and similar tasks should all be a part of your car maintenance routine.

However, there are some issues related to your vehicle that you shouldn’t try to resolve by yourself, except in the case that you are a professional mechanic. With some issues, your interference might only cause your vehicle to completely break down, which will, in turn, have a significant impact on your budget. We did a bit of researching and we’ve come up with this short guide through some of the car issues you should never try to fix on your own. Let’s check it out.

Meddling with Air Conditioning

For some reason, most people think that fixing or recharging a car’s AC system is an easy task. The truth is completely different. Car’s AC system is usually quite complicated, and it contains hazardous chemicals. There are a lot of factors that affect how your AC system works. It’s true that sometimes the issue can be resolved relatively fast, but in most situations, unfortunately, this is not the case. If you have a Freon leak or a worn out compressor, the best thing to do would be to contact a mechanic. The same thing goes in case you need to recharge the AC system or replace the fan. Trying to do these things on your own might make the AC system fail, and you might expose yourself to some quite dangerous materials.

Fixing Suspension on Your Own

Another thing most car owners usually take for granted is the vehicle’s suspension. This system looks quite simple and usually seems easy to repair, or replace. Just a few thin metal pieces which seem connected in a logical way. But, if you don’t know exactly what you are doing, interfering with suspension system might jeopardize your vehicle, as well as your life, and the lives of other drivers. A worn out suspension can make your drive feel uncomfortable as you start to feel basically every bump in the road. Many drivers think of this as an inconvenience, but it’s actually a real hazard. Aside from making your ride a bit unstable, an improper suspension can seriously affect your emergency handling. This can lead to some serious accidents, so make sure your suspension is always in great condition, and talk to your mechanic about it to learn how to maintain it properly.

Engine Tune-Ups and Upgrades

It’s a bit redundant to say that an engine is the most important part of your car. If you don’t know exactly what you are doing, you can literally destroy your vehicle. As the technology evolved during years, so did the car engines. Modern engines are highly computerized, which makes it even harder for someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, to try and address any issue with it. If you were thinking about upgrading or tuning up your engine, do your research. Focus on experts that provide only the best mechanical services and repairs you can find, and talk with them. Try to understand everything that they will have to do. This complicated process is definitely something for a team of professionals, rather than spending your weekend in the garage, just to be forced to take your car to the mechanic afterward.

Replacing a Worn Timing Belt

Quite a common issue that happens with cars is wearing out the timing belt. The timing belt helps keep your engine elements in sync. From valves and cylinders, all the way to the crankshaft and pistons, timing belt synchronizes them all and keeps them working in order. Now, timing belts can crack and break after some time, and even though it might seem easy to replace it, all of the professional mechanics agree – don’t do this on your own. The timing belt should be replaced every 100.000 km or after 5 years of use. Even though it seems simple, replacing the timing belt is quite a challenge, and even some inexperienced mechanics might have problems with it. If you don’t know how to address this issue, you might mess up your engine significantly. This will cost you up to 10 times more, so be careful and make sure you talk to experts before it’s too late.

Wrapping It Up

As a society, we rely quite a lot on our cars. They have become an essential part of our everyday lives, and most of the car owners started taking them for granted. This can lead to some serious hazards. If you’re not a professional, make sure you find one. This way you won’t risk your life, as well as no one else’s too.  Talk to professionals, but learn as much as you can about the process behind repairing your car’s components. This way you will save quite a lot of money, and your car will run smoothly for years.
