Black Panther sinks Titanic at all-time US box office

Black Panther has overtaken Titanic to become the third highest-grossing film in US cinema history.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel film has surpassed the $659.5 million domestic total reached by James Cameron’s disaster epic to become the third most-watched film at the all time US box office (although the figures have not been adjusted for inflation).

The film still places behind all-time cinema kingpins, James Cameron’s first 3D outing Avatar ($760.5 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million).

However, considering the movie is still showing in US cinemas, that could all still change.

Black Panther spent an impressive five weeks at the top of the US box office, holding off competition from the likes of Tomb Raider and A Wrinkle in Time before it was eventually toppled by Pacific Rim Uprising.

As well as charting third in US cinema history, Black Panther has grossed $1.29 billion globally, making it the tenth biggest global cinema hit of all time.

Last month, the film also toppled The Avengers to officially become the highest grossing superhero movie of all time in the US .

Phew. Impressive work.

It seems Black Panther fever will continue over the coming months, as Wakanda will also play a big part in Avengers: Infinity War if this latest teaser is anything to go by.

So, yeah. Wakanda ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Black Panther is in cinemas now.
