8 Most Painful Health Conditions

Pain is a feeling that occurs when your body is trying to inform you that something goes wrong in your body. This is a signal from your nervous system that involves the complex interaction between your brain and other body parts. This pain is known as acute. But if it lasts over 6 months, this type of pain is considered chronic. Chronic pain can be debilitating and decreases the quality of your life significantly.

Below are 8 types of chronic pain conditions that can cause the worst pain in your life.

1. Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that affects the entire body. Fatigue, sleep problems, and mental issues often accompany this health condition. Moreover, patients suffering from fibromyalgia are often more sensitive to pain than others. Fibromyalgia changes the way your body perceives pain signals from the body. Fibromyalgia usually develops as a result of physical damage, infection, psychological stress, or surgery.

2. Kidney stones

Kidney stones occur when urine volume decreases or there is an accumulation of minerals naturally found in your urine. If a kidney stone doesn’t travel within the kidney and down the ureter, it can be asymptomatic. But when the kidney stone starts traveling and moving out of the kidney, it can lead to the development of severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs, and lower abdomen.

3. Arthritis

Arthritis is a widespread disease that causes inflammation in one or several joints within the body. The most common symptoms of arthritis are pain and stiffness, which impair movement and worsen with age. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout are the most common kinds of arthritis. Arthritis pain, also known as arthralgia, can be described as a dull, aching, or a burning feeling.

4. Trigeminal neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder that affects the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve. It is one of the most painful disorders that one may experience. It causes extreme burning pain or a feeling of electric shock in your face, including your eyes, lips, scalp, nose, upper jaw, forehead, and lower jaw. While the pain is excruciating, an experienced pain doctor can help relieve discomfort.

5. Shingles

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that attacks the nerves in your skin. This skin condition is characterized by acute, burning pain, as well as itching, tingling, and fluid-filled rush. This disease is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. It can survive in nerve cells after the disease and may be reactivated over time, causing shingles in some people. It is one of the most painful conditions known.

6. Cluster headaches

A cluster headache is an unusual form of headache that causes severe pain and occurs in cluster periods. The cluster headache is often accompanied by autonomic symptoms like agitation and restlessness. The discomfort is usually so severe that it can impair a person’s ability to perform daily tasks. Before a cluster headache attack, you may experience a migraine-like aura that is followed by intense pain on one side of the head.

7. Appendicitis

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, a tiny and thin pouch linked to your colon. When appendicitis becomes inflamed, it can cause excruciating discomfort. In some situations, an inflamed appendix may rupture, resulting in peritonitis, infection of the inner lining of the abdomen. The symptoms of appendicitis include pain around the umbilical region and spread down into the right side of the lower abdomen.

8. Sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease is a cluster of blood diseases characterized by changes in the structure of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of blood. People with this condition have an unusual type of hemoglobin known as hemoglobin S. It causes red blood cells to assume a sickle or crescent shape. One of the first symptoms of sickle cell disease is periodic episodes of pain, known as crises.
