8 Common Oral Issues That Can Cause Toothache

If you have ever experienced a toothache, then you probably know how exhausting it can be. Many people tend to use pain medications or home remedies to ease the pain. But you should understand that a toothache can be caused by various conditions. If left untreated, some of them can lead to severe complications. In this article, we have gathered eight common oral issues that can cause toothache.

1. Tooth decay

Tooth decay is a condition in which a tooth develops a hole. This hole occurs when acids (produced by bacteria in your mouth) soften and eat away tooth enamel. In the initial stages, tooth decay usually doesn’t chase any symptoms. But when the hole reaches the pulp with nerve endings and blood vessels, you may experience a severe toothache. In this case, it is essential to visit a dentist and fill the cavity. Otherwise, tooth decay can destroy the whole tooth.

2. Gum disease

Gum disease is an inflammation that occurs in gums. In most cases, it is caused by bacteria overgrowth but certain factors like heredity and diabetes can increase your likelihood of gum disease. Symptoms of gingivitis (the initial stage of gum disease) include gum bleeding, redness, swelling, and bad breath. If left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis that can cause pus between the teeth, gum recession, toothaches, and loose teeth.

3. Tooth fracture

Tooth fracture is a quite serious and painful condition. The crack can reach the roots of the tooth. This can result in serious complications since it can be quite difficult to restore such damage. A fractured tooth can cause toothache, increased tooth sensitivity, and increase risk of tooth decay and bad breath since food particles can fill the crack.

4. Dental abscess

A dental abscess is a condition that occurs when the infection penetrates the tooth and leads to the development of a sac with pus inside the teeth, in the gums, or in the bone that holds the teeth in place. The most common symptoms of a dental abscess include:

– Severe toothache

– Tooth sensitivity

– Bad breath

– Unpleasant taste in the mouth

– Fewer

– Swollen gum

– Difficulties opening the mouth

– Problems with eating

It is essential to treat a dental abscess as soon as possible to avoid the development of a dental cyst and the entry of bacteria into the bloodstream.

5. Teeth grinding

Teeth grinding is a condition in which the person clenches their teeth. People can grind their teeth during sleep or when they are awake. This condition can lead to toothache, teeth loosening, tooth fractures, increased teeth sensitivity, and even tooth loss. You can use a mouthguard at night to reduce the pressure and prevent the development of complications.

6. Enamel erosion

Enamel erosion occurs when your tooth enamel becomes worn out. This condition can be caused by teeth grinding, excessive tooth bruising, increased consumption of acidic foods and drinks, chronic acid reflux, and other factors that affect tooth enamel. Enamel erosion usually manifests itself through toothache, teeth sensitivity, tooth discoloration, and cracks on the teeth.

7. Chipped tooth

A chipped tooth occurs when you break a piece of tooth. Even though a chipped tooth is not always painful, it can cause a severe toothache if the damage has reached the inner layer of the tooth (the pulp). Your dentist can restore your tooth with the help of a dental bond or filling.

8. Old dental work

It is important to understand that even the most qualitative dental work can wear out over time. For example, tooth fillings can fall off while dental crowns and bridges can become loose. The damaged filling can open the sensitive pulp that can react with pain to temperature changes, foods, drinks, and even cold air.
