Immediate Dental Implant Placement: Why You Need Not Fear Tooth Loss?

Immediate implantation is the placement of dental implants after the extraction of the tooth.

Unfortunately, ceratin dental problems often lead to tooth loss. In most cases, dentists try to save the natural tooth, but if the disease progresses and heavily damages the tooth, it should be removed. After tooth extraction, many patients get used to teeth spacing which for various reasons can delay implantation. Not all patients know that even a few days spent without an extracted tooth can lead to a number of dental problems. The most common problem is malocclusion. This condition is linked to tooth decay, worn tooth enamel, speech problems, and chewing and jaw problems. Modern dentists have a lot of knowledge and experience in helping the patient with this problem. The best way to solve this problem quickly is with immediate dental implant placement.

Steps of immediate implantation

Immediate implantation usually consists of four steps:

  1. You need to start with a consultation with a dentist. Your doctor will prescribe some tests and an additional examination. It’s important to perform a CT scan that will produce 3D images of your mouth including teeth, bone tissue, and nerve pathways. These are useful for the accurate placement of dental implants.
  2. Your dentist will analyze the images and choose the most appropriate implant size and type.
  3. Your dentist will prepare the space between teeth and immediately install the implant and in most cases, it is immediately possible to install a temporary (provisional) crown on this “tooth”.
  4. After immediate dental implantation, an orthopedic dentist will install the tooth crown for a period of 6 months on average, after which it will be replaced with the final construction without additional surgical interventions. All the ongoing procedures are absolutely painless and quick.

Immediate loading of oral implants is a beneficial and successful treatment protocol in implant dentistry that increases the patient’s comfort. Immediate installation of dental implants is less invasive and requires a shorter recovery time. Rinsing with saltwater, gentle teeth brushing, and maintaining a dental implant recovery diet (avoiding hard foods, popcorn, acidic foods, and spices) will also reduce recovery time.

After tooth extraction without immediate implantation, bone tissue is rearranged and part of the bone “disappears” within several months. He profile of soft tissues (gums) in this area also changes, which can affect both the aesthetics and health of the tissues surrounding the implant. Immediate implantation with a crown allows you to preserve the bone tissue around the tooth and also helps maintain the natural contour of the gums.

Contraindications of immediate implantation

In order to avoid complications and ensure implant success, it’s important to select patients who don’t possess contraindications to this therapy. Contraindications to immediate dental implant placement include:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Uncompensated diabetes mellitus
  • Immune system disorders (Systemic lupus, IBD, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Graves’ disease, vasculitis, etc.)
  • Nervous system disorders (epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease, neurofibromatosis, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular system disorders (Deep vein thrombosis, high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, etc.)
  • Mental disorders
  • Malignant neoplasms
  • Acute inflammatory diseases in the oral cavity (periodontitis, gingivitis, and oral cavities)
  • Hypertonicity of the masticatory muscles

It is important to understand that these restrictions are not specific only for dental implants, they are also characteristic of many surgical interventions. Keep in mind that immediate dental implantation requires a highly qualified specialist to ensure the prosthesis feels and looks natural and to avoid health risks. Proper daily oral hygiene and healthy teeth is another important factor of successful dental implant placement.
