5 Common Myths and Misconceptions About Dental Crowns

From a medical standpoint, dental crowns are fixed prosthetic restorations, which are designed to restore a damaged tooth to its original size and shape. Normally, they are permanently cemented on teeth that have cracked or otherwise been damaged. In some cases, they are extended into the root surface. Dental crowns are generally custom made in order to fit each tooth. Ceramics, porcelain, metal, gold, and resin are the common components of dental crowns.

You are most probably familiar with dental crowns if you have ever needed any kind of restorative dentistry. There are a lot of people who have some misconceptions about dental crowns that restrict them from proper dental treatment and perfect smile. The most common myths and misconceptions are depicted in the following section.

  1. Dental crowns can be stained by drinks and food

This is probably the most common misconception people have about dental crowns. The vast majority of people believe that they can be yellowed and stained over time. However, specialists claim that because of its material (porcelain), there is no way your dental crowns can be stained they way your natural teeth can. That is the main reason why matching the shade of your teeth and the shade of your crowns is so important.

  1. They are mainly used for restorative dentistry

Some people also believe that the main use of dental crowns is in restorative dentistry. According to specialists, dental crowns are a good solution for rebuilding a broken tooth or for patients who have undergone root canal therapy. Therefore, they can be also used for cosmetic dentistry in order to provide you with a white and beautiful smile.

  1. Dental crowns do not look natural

This is the main concern people have about dental crowns. However, doctors assure people that they do not look fake. In fact, they have an appearance of normal and natural teeth. It is almost impossible for other people to determine the difference between your teeth and dental crowns.

  1. It is impossible to chip or break them

Even though porcelain is known for its resistance to breaking and chipping, dental crowns are still not immune to damage. In case if you bite on something extremely hard or get injured during the accident, collision or fall, there is a high chance of your dental crowns to be broken. Although, there is always a possibility to replace or repair them without encountering major difficulties.

  1. This is an extremely extensive and painful procedure

Dentists say that this procedure is performed in order to end the discomfort and not the other way around. Even though this process involves reshaping and polishing for the purpose of tooth cap preparation, it should be completely painless. Due to technological advancements such as sedation and laser treatment, patients have a chance to experience more comfortable and quick dentist session. In addition to that, doctors normally use local anesthesia around the tooth to numb the patient.

There are also people who have concerns about the recovery process. Some people believe that it is an extremely unpleasant process. However, dentists assure that the vast majority of patients are able to get back to their normal activities already after one day following the procedure. The only complaint patients might have is sensitivity to hot and cold within the first week.

All the aforementioned can restrict people from proper dental treatment and dental crown placement. It is highly recommended to visit your dental specialist and voice all the concerns you have about dental crowns. He/she will be able to assess the condition of your teeth and tell whether this is the right option for you.
